Much Marcle Dovecote

Restoration of 17C dovecote

Processes undertaken. Pointing, Roofing, Masonry Buildings, Limework

We undertook the careful restoration of an intricate Dovecote built in 1641. The trustees of the Pennington-Mellor-Munthe Charitable Trust at Hellens, Much Marcle contracted us to repair the 17th Century octagonal Dovecote. The work formed part of a programme of repairs to bring redundant buildings back into use.

The Project

The Dovecote was re-roofed, keeping the existing tile pattern and incorporating sheepswool insulation to improve the thermal efficiency of the building.  Where needed, the building was re-pointed in lime mortar.  An oak floor was reinstated to re-create the first floor and a bespoke oak stairs was built to follow the octagonal walls.  Natural light was allowed in by glazing the lantern at the top.
